A busy week for trade negotiations

This will be a busy week for U.S. trade negotiators.

A Chinese delegation will be in Washington for meetings with U.S. Treasury Department officials, the first major trade negotiations between the countries in more than two months. The meeting has renewed speculation of a potential summit between President Trump and Chinese President in November.

European trade officials will also travel to Washington to begin preparations for bilateral trade talks with the U.S. The discussions are part of the trans-Atlantic trade truce that President Trump and the European Commission president reached in late July.

On the NAFTA front, Mexican officials will return to D.C. in hopes of resolving final differences on the trade pact. There are reports that American negotiators have backed off on demands that Mexico limit exports of ag products like strawberries and blueberries.

Analysts say an agreement between the U.S. and Mexico could pressure Canada to move more quickly and to offer more concessions in the NAFTA talks. Canada has been absent from face-to-face talks in recent weeks.
