Alexander Rossi picks up second straight IndyCar win

  • Next race: 8 p.m. Saturday at Madison, Ill.
Alexander Rossi (27) leads the field through Turn 3 during a restart of the IndyCar auto race at Pocono Raceway, Sunday, Aug. 19, 2018, in Long Pond, Pa.

Here’s the breakdown of the ABC Supply 500 at Pocono Raceway:

Alexander Rossi picked up his second straight IndyCar Series victory and third of the season in the ABC Supply 500 at Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Pa.

Rossi led 180 of 200 laps and took the lead for good on Lap 172. Pole sitter Will Power, Rossi's only real challenger, had a bobble as he headed into his final pit stop, allowing Rossi to easily regain the lead and cruise to a 4-second victory.

Rossi cut Scott Dixon's championship points lead to 29. Dixon finished third, Sebastien Bourdais fourth and Josef Newgarden fifth.

Rossi also won the street course race at Long Beach and last month's event at Mid-Ohio.

Willing to talk racing: Tony Kanaan’s car suffered an early lack of power and he abandoned the race. He joined the NBC Sports announcing team to offer race analysis. He said he believed Fernando Alonso will compete in more than one IndyCar race next year. Alonso, who recently retired from Formula One, drove in the 2017 Indianapolis 500.

Second crash: The race’s second attempt at a start came on Lap 9, and Robert Wickens and Ryan Hunter-Reay came together in a violent crash that resulted in Wickens being taken to an area hospital. The right front of Wickens’ car touched the left rear of Hunter-Reay’s. Wickens’ car was launched on top of Hunter-Reay’s car and into the Turn 2 wall and catch fence. Wickens’ car was destroyed and the resulting damage to the catch fence resulted in a two-hour race delay. James Hinchcliffe, Takuma Sato and Pietro Fittipaldi were also caught up in the crash, all being eliminated from the race.

First crash: Coming onto the main straightaway at the start of the race, Graham Rahal (starting 18th) and Spencer Pigot (starting 16th) touched, with Pigot spinning toward the inside and Rahal’s car suffering extensive damage that required repairs. Some drivers believed pole sitter Will Power came into the front straight too slowly, causing a backup among the slower qualifiers.
