Packers' Nick Perry eyes return to game action after being activated from PUP list

GREEN BAY - Nick Perry’s long wait ended Sunday when the Green Bay Packers activated their veteran outside linebacker from the physically unable to perform list.

Perry started camp on the PUP list while recovering from offseason ankle surgery. He was held out of the team’s spring activities, so Sunday’s closed practice was his first participation since last season.

In the past week, Perry’s physical activity increased. He worked out on the sideline going through simulated pass-rush drills with dummy pads. Perry said he expects an incremental increase in his activity going forward, much like the Packers used after activating right tackle Bryan Bulaga from PUP earlier this month.

“It’s still a day-by-day situation,” Perry said. “It’s a longer week this week. For me, just getting out there and getting into the progressions and getting my footing back, and just starting to build that foundation again, I think that’s the approach.”

Perry said he wants to participate in the remaining preseason games, but it’s unlikely he’ll be on the field Friday when the Packers travel to the Oakland Raiders. Traditionally, the Packers first work a player returning from PUP in individual drills, then team reps, before placing them in a live, game setting.

Bulaga has yet to play in an exhibition, though he started taking team reps last week.

“Their field isn’t as great, either,” Perry said of the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum, where the Raiders play. “So that might be another reason why they might say, ‘Hey, just take it easy, wait for next week.’”

But Perry expects to be available Week 1 when the Packers host the Chicago Bears.

“Oh yeah,” Perry said. “That’s something I’ve been chopping at. Working hard, staying humble about it, and the opportunity will come.”
