Naples, Immokalee, Barron Collier, Golden Gate, Palmetto Ridge win preseason classics

The Naples Daily News staff

NAPLES 25, NORTH FORT MYERS 14

At Staver Field, Naples High School

• Naples led 18-0 at halftime, but North Fort Myers outscored the Golden Eagles offense 14-0 in the second half and outgained Naples 133 yards to 101. Naples’ only points after halftime came when junior Paul St. Louis returned the third quarter kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown.

• The Eagles were playing without senior running back Chez Mellusi, a Clemson commit who rushed for 1,505 yards last season. Mellusi was resting a sore hamstring and will play next week, Naples coach Bill Kramer said.

• North senior Shomari Mason rushed for a game-high 125 yards. He also had two interceptions as a defensive back. His 60-yard run in the first quarter took the Red Knights inside the Naples 20, but the drive ended on a blocked field goal.

• Senior Drew Wiltsie, in his first season as Naples’ starting quarterback, completed just five passes. However, they went for 110 yards, including a 46-yard score to St. Louis in the second quarter.

• The Knights’ strong showing in the second half came thanks to their new quarterback. Senior Jesse Charles threw for 91 yards in the second half, including touchdowns of 34 and 23 yards, both to sophomore receiver Daniel Pilgram.

At Tudryn Field

• Sophomore running back Raheem Toombs announced his arrival emphatically, rushing for a game-high 160 yards on eight carries, including an electrifying 66-yard touchdown scamper to start the third quarter

• Indians star quarterback RJ Rosales left the game in the third quarter with a left shoulder injury, but said he’d be fine to play in the season opener against Golden Gate.

• Gulf Coast had a chance to take the early lead, with junior quarterback Justin Mattia hitting receiver Brandon Jonas for a big gain down the field. Jonas was stripped on the play, with Immokalee recovering inside its 5. The Indians drove down the field and grabbed the edge on the first of two Jose Perez field goals.

• The Sharks pulled off a gutsy fake punt inside their own 5, trailing 13-0 in the second quarter. Punter Eli Carter saw the right side of the field open and sprinted for a 32-yard gain.

• Charles Toombs showed his versatility for the Indians, starting the game in the slot on offense and at his customary free safety position on defense. He also filled in for Rosales at quarterback, ripping off a 71-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

BARRON COLLIER 34, LELY 6

At Cougar Stadium

• Barron Collier got off to a scorching start. After holding Lely to a three-and-out, the Cougars needed just one play to get on the board as Jason Grimes hit Jayden Rolle in stride down the right sideline for a 55-yard score.

• A junior, Grimes completed 8 of 19 attempts for 154 yards with four touchdowns. He had three TD tosses in the first half alone.

• Rolle, a senior who also plays defensive back, had a banner game. Not only did he catch Grimes' first pass on his fingertips while stretching out, but he had two carries for 63 yards including a dashing 38-yard touchdown gallop.

• Drew Powell, a junior, carried the load for the Cougars. A strong runner, Powell had 86 yards on 12 totes. He also had 55 yards on receptions, including a swing pass to the left flat that he turned into a 38-yard score.

• Lely coach Fritz Jacques thinks Henderson Francois is one of the top two running backs in Collier County and it was easy to see why. Against Barron Collier's stacked line, Francois managed just 41 yards on 11 carries. But he busted loose on an 80-yard touchdown kickoff return that easily left the Cougars in his wake. He had a 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown called back.

GOLDEN GATE 40, LaBELLE 6

At Titan Stadium

• Before Friday’s preseason game, Golden Gate coach Mike DiGrigoli said he wanted his team to “build momentum” as it opens against Immokalee next week. Build momentum the Titans did, scoring on their first four possessions.

• Big plays marked Titans’ scores: QB Ryan Magel threw touchdown passes of 31 and 63, and 39 yards. Senior RB Jay Herard scored on a 61-yard run. Hunter Jones picked up a Herard fumble and went 35 yards to paydirt.

• The Gate has a weapon in kicker Augustine Morales, who booted a field goal easily from 49 yards.

• Cowboys QB Bryce Hall was chased all night but remained composed, connecting with fellow senior Enrique Hall for 28 yards for LaBelle’s lone score.

• LaBelle RB/DE Maynard Blackmon was an all-area honorable mention in Lee County last season. In limited action on Friday, the senior picked up where he left off. His biggest play was a 42-yard kick return.

PALMETTO RIDGE 33, IDA BAKER 6

At Palmetto Ridge

• Kamonte Grimes had himself a game, recording a touchdown reception and a punt return touchdown. But the highlight came on a meaningless 27-yard catch where he bobbled the ball with one hand and reeled it in as he went to the ground.

• Key to the game: It was 6-0 Palmetto Ridge when Ida Baker was lining up for a field goal to cut the score in half. Palmetto Ridge’s Voshon Siriac blocked the field goal attempt and Colby Singletary returned it 79 yards for a touchdown and a 10-point swing.

• Palmetto Ridge coach Chris Toukonen: "It was the first time for a lot of these guys playing under the lights. We have a lot of sophomores and nine underclassmen on defense, but this is the most talented team I’ve seen here."

• The Bulldogs were able to put some strong drives together, but were unable to convert once they reached the red zone.

• The Bulldogs’ Eric Swanson took over quarterback duties in the fourth quarter and got things going. He drove the team 60 yards on quarterback scrambles and a 36-yard pass to James Logan.

Miami Edison 28, South Fort Myers 6

At South Fort Myers

• South Fort Myers senior Freddie Ward shouldered most of the offensive load for the Wolfpack, carrying 21 times and catching four passes for just under 80 total yards and a touchdown.

• Two fumbles in the first quarter by the Wolfpack led to Miami Edison’s first 16 points in the game.

• The Wolfpack had a comeback brewing, with a chance to cut the Edison lead from 14 to 8, but the Red Raiders defense stuffed a fourth-down rush attempt on fourth-and-goal from the 1-yard line midway through the fourth quarter.

• Both teams were rusty, with each squad suffering through double-digit penalties. South was unable to capitalize on over 100 yards in penalties by Miami Edison that kept multiple drives alive deep in Red Raiders territory.

•  Estero's Duvell Green made two highlight catches to finish with two touchdowns on the night, catching a touchdown over a defender, and catching another pass that deflected off a defender before finding the end zone.

• First Baptist sophomore quarterback Brady Dean powered the Lions’ offense passing for 307 yards and throwing four touchdowns.

• The Lions came close to catching the Wildcats in the closing moments of the game after Kyle Batiato and Dean connected for their third touchdown with 1:15 left to play, but the Lions couldn’t beat the clock.
