Potato blight confirmed in Michigan

Michigan State University Diagnostic Services has confirmed the first case of potato late blight of the season.

The disease was found in a field in Michigan’s most southeastern county, Monroe.

Michigan State University has been warning growers of the high risk of late blight in southern counties because the recent warm weather, high humidity and frequent rains which can make crops more susceptible to the disease.

Growers can see their risk of outbreak by using MSU’s Late Blight Forecast Tool online.

Potato late blight spreads extremely quickly and can defoliate entire fields if not treated within three weeks.
