As Houston Texans star and Pewaukee native J.J. Watt zeroes in on a comeback from a grisly leg injury suffered last year, his training regimen naturally has included some stops in Wisconsin.

A new 60-second Reebok ad profiling Watt's comeback and announcing the launch of the JJ II Clean Slate shoe features footage of him running up and down the bleachers at Arrowhead High School's football field.

"These last two years were extremely difficult for me," Watt said in a Facebook post, referring to the injuries that kept him out for the bulk of 2016 and 2017. "We’ve all faced adversity at some point in our lives, it’s how we choose to respond to it that controls our destiny. What we ultimately want is to overcome it and emerge on the other side even better than before. A fresh start. A Clean Slate."

He goes on to say the shoe represents that clean slate, with a unique construction-tape design on the inside serving as part of that message.

"The construction tape on the inside represents the work that it takes to earn that fresh start and the quote 'never let a stumble in the road be the end of the journey' was something that helped get me through the difficult days," Watt wrote. "I wore this shoe throughout my entire recovery from my broken leg and it served as daily motivation to put aside any negative thoughts and attack the day. I hope it can do the same for you. Take it one day at a time, control what you can control and come out on the other side better than you went in. Earn your Clean Slate."

In the ad, Watt also shows off a significant post-surgery scar on his leg.

The Houston Texans open the season Sept. 9 at New England.

Meanwhile, as Watt's younger brother, TJ, prepares to face the Green Bay Packers as a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday, he's thinking about a pregame meal with some local flavor.
