Disagreements remain on SNAP work requirements

Two of the Illinois congressional delegation serving on the Farm Bill Conference Committee maintain differing views on the nutrition title of that legislation.  Republican Rodney Davis supports the food stamp work and job training requirements in the House version of the bill because there are millions more on food stamps during low unemployment.

“Let’s get people trained and into the jobs that we know are available, that are good-paying in our rural communities right now,” said Davis, in an interview with Brownfield Ag News.

Democrat Cheri Bustos supports the Senate farm bill that has none of the SNAP work requirements.  She tells Brownfield work requirement pilot programs were part of the last farm bill.

“What would work, what would to cost effective, where would we be able to invest and get a return on that investment,” said Bustos, suggesting to at least wait with the requirements in the House Farm Bill.  “When we get the reports back on those, and most of those are due in the next year or so, then we can make more educated decisions on how that looks.”

It’s expected that conference committee work will begin in early September, about thirty days before the current farm bill expires.
