Michigan Farm Bureau invites candidates for governor to forum

Michigan farmers want to know where candidates running for governor stand on issues impacting one of the state’s largest sectors.

Current Attorney General and Republican candidate for governor Bill Schuette says if elected, he plans to roll back Granholm’s income tax increase, reform auto insurance and improve reading comprehensive in the state.  “I think for agriculture, it’s about exports, understanding this is a business so the permit process needs to be more flexible and speedier, and we’ve got to cut taxes.”

Democratic opponent Gretchen Whitmer was invited but did not attend Michigan Farm Bureau’s Statewide Candidate Interview Forum.

Michigan Farm Bureau president Carl Bednarski tells Brownfield they have yet to make an endorsement for governor and Whitmer not attending is disappointing.  “We’ve had great success in the past. We had Governor Granholm attend in the past. It’s uncommon.”

He says Farm Bureau will be evaluating candidates on their stance on infrastructure, environmental issues, trade as well as immigration and other priorities of the organization.
