CommonGround Nebraska hosts ‘Banquet on the Farm’

CommonGround Nebraska recently held its first-ever “Banquet on the Farm” on a farm north of Omaha.

Hilary Maricle, a farmer from Albion, Nebraska, was one of the CommonGround volunteers working at the event.

“What we do is invite those food influencers—your nutritionists, fitness trainers, chefs—and really try to let them get a taste of what we do on the farm,” Maricle said. “Give them the opportunity to ask questions more than anything. If they have a food question, they can get it answered by a farmer.”

GMOs, sustainability, antibiotics, and organics were some of the topics discussed, followed by a three-course meal served under a giant tent next to a soybean field.

Brian O’Malley, associate dean for culinary arts at Metropolitan Community College in Omaha, says he appreciated the opportunity to discuss his food production concerns with actual farmers.

“Finding a way to be in conversation with each other helps us see each other’s perspective—and I’m going to take away some good new perspectives from here because of that,” O’Malley said.

CommonGround describes itself as a movement of farm women “helping consumers sort through the myths and misinformation surrounding food and farming”.
