Oxnard police respond to gunshot victim in south Oxnard

A gunshot victim described by Oxnard police as being in “very serious condition” was taken to a local hospital Monday night, authorities said.

The incident was reported at 10:20 p.m. in the 5300 block of South J Street, south of Pleasant Valley Road in the Southwinds neighborhood in south Oxnard.

The man, about 40 years old, was taken to Ventura County Medical Center, authorities said. Initial reports indicated he suffered a gunshot wound to the head, officials confirmed.

The incident occurred in a residential area on the east side of a canal that runs down J Street. People could be seen gathered on the sidewalk talking and some could be heard crying.

J Street was partially blocked south of Clara Street as officers investigated the incident.
