Minnesota crops maturing faster than normal

Minnesota crops are maturing faster than normal.

The latest USDA report says 65 percent of corn has reached the dough stage, one week ahead of the five-year average.

More than 90 percent of soybeans are setting pods, 11 days quicker than normal.

Crop condition ratings held mostly steady for the week ending Sunday, with 77 percent of corn and 73 percent of soybeans rated good to excellent.

Blue Earth County farmer Kevin Paap tells Brownfield there’s a lot of variability in south-central Minnesota.

“We’re going to have an okay crop.  It’s going to be a good crop where there is crops.  It’s not going to be great yields.  We’ve got some drown out spots, but we are far more fortunate than southwest Minnesota.”

Meanwhile, the spring wheat harvest progressed to nearly 50 percent complete.

Shayne Isane of Badger farmers near the Canada border and says 2018 has been very dry.

“It’s starting to show a lot on our corn and soybeans.  We’re just starting our wheat harvest, we’ll see how that goes.  We’re expecting average to below-average yields on that also.”

For other small grains, oat harvesting is 55 percent done and the harvest of barley has surpassed 70 percent.
