Agronomist optimistic about grain fill in southwest Minnesota
An agronomist monitoring corn fields in southwest Minnesota is optimistic about grain fill.
Tony Weiss with Channel Seed says conditions during pollination were beneficial.
“We’ve had a lot of warm temperatures early, which helps build that factory, build the corn plant.”
He tells Brownfield cooler nighttime temperatures and abundant moisture have limited plant stress.
“As you progress through the reproductive stages, it becomes less and less likely, the further you get away from pollination, that the plant will abort those ovules.”
Weiss says if the cooler pattern continues, it should allow the ear to be filled out to the end.
