Anxiety over trade issues on the rise

Iowa ag secretary Mike Naig

As harvest approaches, farmer anxiety over trade issues is on the rise.

“When you get to August and September you’ve got to decide, what’s my marketing plan going to do with the bushels that I have. Do I store, do I sell, and do meet my cash flow needs for the bank? Those questions become very paramount in a farmer’s mind,” says Iowa Farm Bureau president Craig Hill. “We need to be very, very careful here. This is a very vulnerable place for us to be in.”

Iowa ag secretary Mike Naig says Iowa farmers have been very patient with President Trump. But that patience may be wearing thin.

“The thing that we urge the administration is to move with some urgency to get this resolved and remind them that our farmers are planning for the 2019 growing season and these markets and these conditions are impacting those decisions,” Naig says.

Hill and Naig made those comments in interviews with Brownfield at the Iowa State Fair.
