USDA raises 2018 soybean, corn crop guesses

The USDA has increased its 2018 U.S. corn and soybean production estimates.

Corn is projected at 14.567 billion bushels, up from July’s guess, but down 1% on the year, with an expected record yield of 178.4 bushels per acre partially canceled out by a 1% reduction in harvested area, to 81.77 million bushels. In 2017, corn totaled 14.604 billion bushels with an average yield of 176.6 bushels per acre and harvested area of 82.703 million acres.

Soybeans are seen at 4.586 billion bushels, also up from a month ago and 4% above a year ago, with record average yield of 51.6 against a 1% decrease in harvested area, to 88.862 million acres. A year ago, soybeans totaled 4.392 billion bushels with an average yield of 49.1 bushels per acre and harvested area of 89.552 million acres.

All wheat is pegged at 1.877 billion bushels, slightly lower than last month, but 8% higher than last year, as a 48% jump in spring wheat to 614.514 million bushels cancels out a 6% decline for winter wheat, now estimated at 1.189 billion bushels. This year’s average yield for winter wheat is seen at 47.9 bushels per acre, compared to 48 in July and 50.2 in 2017, with harvested area of 24.816 million acres, while the average yield for spring wheat is projected at 47.6 bushels per acre, unchanged on the month and up from the average of 41 last year, with harvested area of 12.899 million acres, compared to 10.159 million in 2017. Durum is estimated at 74.432 million acres with an average yield of 39.9 bushels per acre and harvested area of 1.841 million acres, compared to 54.909 million bushels, 25.7 bushels per acre, and 2.136 million acres, respectively, a year ago.

Nationally, corn and soybeans are in the late stage of development, while the spring wheat harvest is ongoing and the winter wheat harvest is nearly wrapped up for the year.
