Recruiting update: Marquette makes final lists for three prospects in Class of 2019

Marquette got a triple dose of recruiting news this week, with three 2019 prospects putting the Golden Eagles on their cut-down lists.

Marquette coach Steve Wojciechowski will have two scholarship slots to fill after next season.

Here is a quick look at the three players: James Bishop, Seth Lundy and Mark "Rocket" Watts.

The early signing period for NCAA basketball recruits is Nov. 14-21.

James Bishop

Bishop is a 6-foot-2 combo guard from Mount St. Joseph High School in Baltimore. He plays on the AAU circuit with Team Elite.

He will take an official visit to MU on Oct. 5, according to ElevateHoops.

OTHER SCHOOLS ON FINAL LIST: Seton Hall, VCU, Louisiana State, St. John's, Colorado

ON MARQUETTE: “(They) have been recruiting me for a while. I’ve built a good relationship with the staff and I like how they allow their guards to play." Bishop told ElevateHoops.

SCOUTING REPORT: Bishop is a smooth left-hander who scores in a variety of ways. He said in one interview that as a kid he looked up to former Milwaukee Bucks guard Brandon Jennings.

Bishop is ranked the No. 172 prospect in the 2019 class by 247 Sports.

Seth Lundy

Lundy is a 6-6 forward from Roman Catholic High School in Philadelphia. He helped the school win its third state title in four seasons

OTHER SCHOOLS ON FINAL LIST: Penn State, Oregon, Louisville, Temple, Virginia Tech, LaSalle, Georgetown, Florida, Mississippi

Roman Catholic High School has been a pipeline to the Nittany Lions in recent seasons.

SCOUTING OUTLOOK: “I feel like (I want) a school that’s going to be able to let me come off screens and shoot, and will let me put the ball on the ground,” Lundy told Philly.com in February. “Defending is No. 1 for me, I’m a defender, so if I’ve got four other guys on the court that’s willing to do whatever, give anything up for their brothers, that’s definitely a fit for me.”

Mark "Rocket" Watts

Watts is a 6-2 guard from Old Redford Academy in Detroit, ranked No. 39 in class by 247 Sports. He is probably more of a classic point guard than Bishop. He plays AAU ball for The Family, which MU fans will recognize as the same team that once boasted the Golden Eagles' Detroit-area triumvirate.

OTHER SCHOOLS ON FINAL LIST: South Carolina, Michigan State, Connecticut, Florida State, Louisville, Oregon, Missouri, Minnesota.

This is an interesting situation, as Watts did not have MU on a list of eight final schools that he put out last month. Then Watts said a few weeks later that his list was "still open to everybody" because his parents weren't involved in the initial cut-down list.

SCOUTING OUTLOOK: "I'm tough, (Michigan State coach Tom Izzo) said I'm tough, I'm aggressive, I'm an aggressive guard, fast. I just have skills," Watts told Mlive.com in April.

2019-'20 MU ROSTER OUTLOOK

MU will have two scholarship slots open for the 2019-'20 season after the graduations of center Matt Heldt and grad transfer guard Joseph Chartouny. Guard Koby McEwen, a transfer from Utah State, will also be able to play with two seasons of eligibility.

Any freshman will be hard-pressed to find playing time on a roster that will be dominated by upperclassmen in seniors Markus Howard, Sam Hauser, Ed Morrow and Sacar Anim as well as juniors Greg Elliott, Jamal Cain, Theo John and McEwen. Sophomores Joey Hauser, Brendan Bailey and Ike Eke will also be in the mix for minutes.
