Trump tweets support of House farm bill SNAP position

President Trump on Thursday tweeted support for the SNAP work requirements in the House farm bill. Democrats oppose the House provision saying it would lead to steep cuts in food stamps. Trump’s tweet also appeared to call for a lower threshold for advancing the farm bill by changing Senate rules to allow for just 51 votes, instead of the current 60 votes.

Senate ag committee chairman Pat Roberts indicates support for a SNAP compromise but there are no cuts in the Senate farm bill version.

The conference committee from both chambers has been named and will work towards a final farm bill. The clock is ticking on a new five-year farm bill by the September 30th deadline.
