SCCA racer from Iowa has died from injuries suffered at Road America

Jim Victor, a financial services professional from Davenport, Iowa, and longtime amateur racer, died Friday after a single-car crash at Road America in Elkhart Lake.

Friday was a test day at the 4-mile road course for the weekend-long SCCA Majors event. The Majors Tour is the top level of amateur road racing in sports cars and open-wheel cars.

In a brief statement, the track said he was “transported via medical helicopter to ThedaCare Regional Medical Center for evaluation. Unfortunately, Jim Victor succumbed to his injuries sustained in the accident.”

Road America did not release any other details regarding the accident.

ThedaCare Regional Medical Center operates facilities in Neenah and Appleton. Each is approximately 45 miles from the track.

Victor was executive director, financial adviser and senior portfolio management director for Victor/Volrath Group at Morgan Stanley in Davenport. He also was a contributor to the Quad City Times newspaper and to KWQC-TV. Victor was active in the community and was a past board member of the United Way in the Quad Cities, according to his biography on the company’s website.

Victor raced in the SCCA’s Formula Continental class. The cars are small, lightweight open-wheel single-seaters with stock 2-liter engines producing about 150 horsepower.  

He also had competed in the vintage event last weekend at Road America. Victor raced in the 24 Hours of Daytona in 2004 as part of a five-man team that finished 13th in the Super Grand Sport class in a Corvette.
