Extreme heat prompts opening of 'cooling centers'

The City of Shreveport will open cooling stations on Saturday to give people a place to cool down during the predicted 100 degree temperatures.

“We want to do all we can to keep our residents safe in this extreme heat,” Mayor Ollie Tyler said.

The cooling centers will have air conditioning, free bottled water and designated seating areas for anyone needing to get out of the heat.

The hours of operation for the centers will be 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday; 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday; closed on Sunday.

The following community centers will serve as cooling stations:
A.B. Palmer, 547 East 79th Street
Airport Park, 6500 Kennedy Drive
Bill Cockrell, 4109 Pines Road
David Raines, 2920 Round Grove Lane
Hattie Perry, 4300 Ledbetter Street
Mamie Hicks, 200 Mayfair Drive
Southern Hills, 1002 Bert Kouns Industrial Loop
Valencia, 1800 Viking Drive

Cooling stations will remain operable until the heat subsides.
