Ed Killer, an outdoors write for TCPALM.com (Far left) and Jim Waymer, award-winning writer for FLORIDATODAY.com talk to Terri Wright, general manager of WFIT, the local public radio station in Brevard County.

Staff members of FLORIDA TODAY.com and TCPALM.com will be on the radio this upcoming week to talk about sharks and other wildlife and ecological issues.

Both news sites are writing about sharks all next week in recognition of the annual Shark Week series put on by The Discovery Channel. FLORIDA TODAY.com and TCPALM.com typically write about sharks because of the well-publicized and numerous shark-human encounters in the region and also because of the vital role sharks in the ecology of the oceans and also the Indian River Lagoon.

The week's shark coverage launches the first installments of FLORIDA TODAY's new "Our Florida Wild" series. The occasional series and blog items will explore the fiercest, slimiest, cleverest and most fascinating among Florida's diverse wildlife. Beyond sharks, we'll examine alligators, snakes and others intriguing critters that creep and crawl — ones that belong here and others that don't.

Our Florida Wild

The creatures that roam our lands and swim our waters often provide windows into emerging threats to human health and to Florida's ecological systems. So we'll look into those as well.

To help kick off the series, on Monday and Tuesday Ed Killer, an outdoors write for TCPALM.com  and Jim Waymer, award-winning writer for FLORIDATODAY.com, will be talking to Terri Wright, general manager of WFIT, about sharks and why they're so important to the environment.

The segments will be broadcast 7:45 a.m. and 5:45 p.m. both Monday and Tuesday on 89.5 FM. They were taped earlier this week at the station's studio on the campus of the Florida Institute of Technology.

Also on Monday, Tess Sheets, who covers breaking news for both the TCPALM.com and FLORIDATODAY.com will be on WSBH 98.5 FM The Beach to talk about shark bite victims and if sharks are really a threat to human.

Tess Sheets, News reporter, Florida Today

Sheets is scheduled to be on that program from 1-2 p.m. on Monday. Facebook users also can watch the appearance on Facebook Live.
