Missouri Governor declares drought alert

Missouri Governor Mike Parson has signed an executive order that puts 47 counties on drought alert.

The USDA has provided extra assistance to livestock producers as a result of the drought which effects much of northern Missouri, central Missouri and parts of southwest and south central. Two-Million dollars is available to help farmers plant cover crops to address inadequate feed and forage. Cover crops established under the emergency initiative offered through the (EQIP) can be grazed or hayed. Existing EQIP cover crop contracts only allow grazing.

Last month, the Missouri DNR’s soil and water districts commission allowed grazing where livestock would normally be excluded.

The National Drought Monitor will update the drought map on Thursday.
