FDA’s Gottlieb likely to crack down on plant-based dairy alternatives

The Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration appears to have sided with dairy farmers on the milk labeling issue.  Scott Gottlieb said, “An almond doesn’t lactate, I will confess.”

The current FDA standard for milk requires milk to come from lactating mammals, and Gottlieb says the FDA is looking to crack down on plant-based alternative products using “milk” in their label.

Dairy groups including National Milk Producers Federation and the American Dairy Coalition say the FDA has failed to enforce that standard for product labels.

Plant-based product promotors including The Good Food Institute have petitioned the FDA to go forward with a rulemaking process and say alternatives have First Amendment rights to use labels to clearly describe their products.

The FDA has a public meeting scheduled for July 26th.
