Weekend Dispatch

Last weekend was one of those rare summer weekends where we had almost no plans. It was sooo nice. I was able to finish a book and start a new one, catch up on a few podcast episodes, watch two movies, and hit the farmers' market on Saturday morning with my husband. The tomatoes here in Jersey are almost at their peak! Here are a few of the things I've been loving this week and some ideas for the weekend ahead.

The Wildflower Art & Music Festival is happening on Saturday, June 21st from 10-5 at The Herbary at Bear Creek Farm in Howell, NJ. If you have never been to The Herbary, it is absolutely lovely. The festival includes 25 local artists, makers, musicians, wellness practitioners, and food vendors in addition to The Herbary's standard offerings. If you are looking for something for the entire family, check it out. Click HERE for more information.

I am definitely on a true crime kick lately (see To Read below). After seeing several Facebook friends post about how riveting The Staircase is, I had to give it a go. This exceptionally well done documentary (from the makers of Making a Murderer) attempts to uncover the horrific details and truth behind the death of Kathleen Peterson, wife of novelist Michael Peterson, who was found dead in her home at the bottom of a staircase. Autopsy results show Kathleen suffered blows to the back of her head that were not a result of the fall. Her husband was convicted of the crime but released from prison when it was discovered that the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation gave misleading information during the case. This documentary digs deep to uncover the truth and bring justice to Kathleen's death.

I love discovering new ways to use leftovers, especially grilled and/or roasted veggies. We love to make a big batch of roasted broccoli to eat with grilled chicken and steak, but we never eat all of it. I like to add it to rice bowls, but even that gets boring fast. When I came across this recipe for charred broccoli and lentil salad, I was thrilled to find a new way to utilize leftover roasted broccoli.

When I finished this book over the weekend, I only had my Kindle with me at the beach and wanted to move on to another book immediately. Other than a sample of The Wife Between Us, I had only To The Bridge downloaded on the Kindle. I couldn't remember when I downloaded it. I'm guessing it was a free download through Amazon Prime. I opened it and began reading. Pretty soon, I was completely sucked in. This book is like a train wreck. It's hard to look, but it's equally as difficult to look away. To The Bridge is written by a journalist who tries to uncover what drove a woman to drop her two children into the Willamette River in Oregon. It's been quite a few years since I've read a true crime book, but this book has me wanting to know why this woman thought her children were better off dead than alive. If you have a Kindle, you can download the book for free HERE.

Hosting a barbecue this weekend? Don't spend a minute of your time creating a playlist for your gathering. This Summer BBQ playlist on Spotify is the 💣. So many good classics on this playlist that you'll find yourself listening to it on more occasions than just your BBQ.

So, tell me. What do you have planned this weekend?
