Divers are searching Lake Hartwell for a man who went underwater and did not resurface, said David Baker, Anderson County's emergency management director.

Crews continued searching until 4 a.m. and plan to resume the search this morning.

Baker said the man and his friend were attempting to swim across a cove near the Singing Pines Recreation Area in Starr when the man disappeared.

"There were two people swimming and one made it across the cove and another didn't," Baker said.

A 911 call about the incident was received around 8:45 p.m., according to Baker.

"We are still within the hour of time that the call was placed, so at this point, we still consider this a rescue mission," Baker said Monday night. "Obviously, if time goes on and we do not find him, we will transition our focus."

Deputies from the Anderson County Sheriff's Office responded, as did the Anderson Technical Rescue Team. The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, which investigates accidents on state waters, was also on the way to the recreation area, which is off U.S. 29 South in Anderson County.

The Singing Pines Recreation Area has been the site of tragedy before.

In June 2017, Deputy Devin Hodges died after being struck by a boat propeller during a training exercise that involved representatives of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Sheriff's Office.
