Adam Foltz, back row left in black, was recently named Gatorade New Mexico Boys Soccer Player of the Year. He is standing with his family, coach, APS Superintendent Adrianne Salas and members of the Alamogordo Public Schools Board of Education.

Alamogordo High School graduate Adam Foltz has been playing soccer since he was three years old.

He made varsity in the eighth grade, recently broke a school record by scoring 38 goals in his senior year with a total of 91 over his varsity career and has earned several awards including the All-State Player of the Year and the Gatorade New Mexico Boys Soccer Player of the Year.

This is the third time in its 33-year history that Gatorade has named an Alamogordo student as the Gatorade New Mexico Boys Soccer Player of the Year.

“They looked at GPA, all his sports activities and his exemplary character,” Foltz’s mother Michelle Foltz said.

Adam graduated this year and maintained a 3.45 GPA. Over his five-year varsity career, Adam has played in 61 games, scored 202 points, 91 goals, 79 shots and 21 assists, according to MaxPreps.

He is attending the University of the Southwest in Hobbs in the fall, where he will be playing soccer on a scholarship and will be studying business.

A part of the honor of being a Gatorade Player of the Year is that he gets to choose a youth sports organization to receive a $1,000 grant.

Adam chose the Otero County Youth Soccer League. He got his start playing with the OCYSL and volunteered to coach a girls’ team there.

The OCYSL has already spent the grant money on equipment.

Foltz was automatically entered into a contest to win an additional $10,000 grant that would go to the OCYSL. The winner of this grant has yet to be announced.

As for next year’s students and players, Foltz has some words of advice.

“Good luck. I hope this season is well,” he said. “Work hard and if you really want it, go out and get it.”

As part of a recognition package, Gatorade will be sending Alamogordo High School a trophy and banner recognizing this honor and a trophy and a formal letter was sent to Foltz.

The selection process for the Gatorade New Mexico Boys Soccer Player of the Year is administered by the Gatorade high school sports leadership team.
