ASA director discouraged by what he’s hearing on trade

An American Soybean Association director meeting with lawmakers in Washington, D.C. this week is discouraged by what he’s hearing on trade.

Joel Schreurs of Tyler, Minnesota says hope is fading for a quick resolution to the tariff situation with China.

“We had a gentleman there that works with the Trade Office and he said it could be years, and that’s where it really gets scary for us.”

If the trade dispute drags out, he tells Brownfield the U.S. will likely lose out to competing exporters.

“Russia, Ukraine, Brazil, opening up more land to fill that void that we’re not going to be able to have a market in.”

The Trump Administration has announced plans to impose more duties on Chinese goods, which would be on top of the $34 billion in tariffs that went into effect July 6th.
