Airport police: Man arrested at RSW, accused of trying to bring gun through security
Airport police arrested an Alva man Thursday after he allegedly tried to bring a weapon through security at Southwest Florida International Airport in Fort Myers.
Officers arrested Joshua Lee Smith, 23, on suspicion of having a firearm without a concealed carry license.
Officers were called to the security checkpoint when TSA agents noticed a .40 Caliber Smith and Wesson while screening a black backpack. The chamber was empty but had a magazine inserted with nine rounds, according to an arrest report issued by airport police.
When officers asked Smith if he had anything he wasn’t supposed to bring through the checkpoint, he told them no, but later admitted to having the gun during a secondary screening, the report said. He told officers he had taken a concealed carry weapons class but hadn't had the money to complete the process.
Officers transported Smith to Lee County Jail. He is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 6.
