New Menomonee Falls boys basketball coach Aaron Womack had the itch to run a program again, but first he needed to clear things with his wife.

“The main thing she said was I prefer you not to because we’re busy,” he said. “However, you don’t want to look back and have any regrets.”

Womack also wanted to talk to his longtime friend Steve Showalter, who in April mutually agreed with the administration to step down as the school's coach. Not only are the two friends, but Womack spent five seasons as Showalter’s assistant, three at Germantown and two at Menomonee Falls.

“Taking the job was one of the hardest decisions I had to make just from a loyalty standpoint, but he (supported) me, so having his backing really meant a lot,” Womack said.

With their support and the thumbs up from his children, Womack took the job. He arrives hoping to provide stability to a program that has now had five coaches in the last 10 years.

Womack, however, is no stranger to Falls on a couple of levels.

His daughter and nephew were part of the high school’s 2018 graduating class and his son, a sixth-grader, plays in the Falls junior program. Womack also has a seventh-grader and third-grader in the district.

“I was going to be involved anyway with the Junior Indians program,” Womack said. “I even asked (the kids) if they mind if Daddy gets back into coaching and they were excited about it. I guess it was the right time. It couldn’t have worked anywhere else.”

Though most people at Falls know him as an assistant, Womack has a long résumé as a head coach.

He spent four years as the coach at Milwaukee North from 1997-2001, coaching the Blue Devils to a regional title in 1998. He coached Milwaukee Juneau in 2005-'06, its final season before closing (the school has since re-opened). Womack then landed at Milwaukee Madison from 2006-'09 and his last stop as a head coach was at Martin Luther in 2011.

Menomonee Falls was 11-13 overall last season and finished seventh in the Greater Metro Conference with a 5-11 record. The team graduated its top three scorers but is expected to return rising junior Buck Siebert, who averaged 9.2 points per game, plus a senior class that had a number of players contribute last season.

“There’s so many people showing love and saying, ‘Congratulations’ and ‘Is there anything I can do to help out,' ” Womack said. “I really appreciate that. People I don’t even know have come forward and said they’re willing to lend a hand and have just been receptive overall to this new guy coming into this role.”
