Illinois Farmer says his biggest concerns are with ag policy, not weather

An Illinois farmer says he’s been fortunate with good crop weather and his biggest concerns are with ag policy decisions.

“We can grow the best crops in the world, but we have to have a good price or we are in trouble too.”

Daryl Brinkmann, who farms in Carlyle, Illinois, says his corn and soybeans are looking good and wheat harvest is almost complete, so his biggest worry involves trade.

“My biggest worry is with President Trump renegotiating NAFTA and tariffs he has put on products coming from China and of course how they are retaliating. I hope that cooler heads can prevail, and we can get some of this straightened out before it goes too far.”

Another concern Brinkmann has is with the renewable fuels standard and how the EPA is granting waivers for the use of renewable fuel identification numbers to certain refineries, which has cut down on the demand for ethanol and biodiesel.

“That indirectly hurts us too. A lot of our crop goes into ethanol and biodiesel and that effects our profitability.”

Brinkmann tells Brownfield weather has been good to a lot of Illinois farmers so far and he hopes policy decisions will follow suit.
