ELKHART LAKE - Victory lane is chaotic by nature.

Sometimes celebrations spread out among the masses. And sometimes the masses crash the party.

Amid all the spraying of bubbly Sunday after the Kohler Grand Prix at Road America, winner Josef Newgarden was stopped on his way back to the podium by a female fan who got a hug and then reached for the bottle in his hand.

He reluctantly gave it to her, she shook it several times and then tried with little success to douse him with what was left.

“That happens,” Newgarden said. “You just got to expect the unexpected in victory lane is what I would say.”

On a day when he led all but two laps and enjoyed the view from the top step of the podium, Newgarden said he had only one complaint:

“I wish we had bigger champagne bottles, to be honest with you.”
