Farmer says diversification is key on his farm

A central Indiana farmer is raising waxy corn to increase profitability on his farm.

Danny Gill says it is also a way to mitigate risk when commodity prices are low.

“Waxy (corn) has it’s positives as far as the seed being cheaper, and it’s not a GMO corn so you don’t have to have a special chemical  and people pay a premium for it,” he says.

He tells Brownfield raising waxy corn, which has nearly 100 percent amylopectin starch, has been a good business decision for the farm.

Gill says although the season started out dry, recent rains have helped improve crop conditions.

He spoke to Brownfield during Purdue University’s 2018 Farm Management Tour in Johnson and Shelby counties.
