Record amount of cheese in cold storage

The National Ag Statistics Service says the amount of cheese in cold storage is at a record high.

American style cheeses like Cheddar and Colby still account for most of the cheese in storage, but there is less of it and more Swiss and other cheeses, including Mozzarella, artisan, and specialty cheeses.

The USDA’s National Ag Statistics Service issued it’s cold storage report Friday, with 1.38 billion pounds of total natural cheese on hand, with 549 million pounds of cheese in the “other” cheese category and 33 million pounds of Swiss on hand.

The butter stocks also jumped 31 million pounds in one month to 338 million pounds, but nowhere near the 1992 record of more than 712 million pounds.
