Painted Wooden Hanging Plant Stand with Chalkboard

I love a good hanging basket but I have one problem. Every year I kill the ones I buy. They hang up so high that I usually forget to water them because out of sight, out of mind. Also, I'm never quite sure how much sun or shade a plant gets so it's usually trial and error. But I got to thinking, hanging baskets are so pretty and when they hang you kind of miss like 50% of the flowers and plants inside because you just can't see them. So, why not move them down to a plant stand? I saw one of these wooden hanging plant stands at a home last year while I was going to garage sales and I thought it was genius. So come see how I made it my own and now I have this painted wooden hanging plant stand on my front porch to enjoy all 100% of the plant. Now here's hoping I keep it watered so it stays alive!

DIY Painted Wooden Hanging Plant Stand

My handy husband took my idea, and used wood we had in our garage to come up with the plans for this DIY hanging plant stand. If you aren't quite as handy and need a plan or two, you can google DIY hanging plant stand and come up with a few different plans with tutorials so you can make your own.

I knew I wanted it to have a header that could be chalk painted so I could add my own personalized message to it. I realized that after it was made, and it was unfinished that it needed painting. I couldn't leave the unfinished wood. I thought about staining it, but I ended up using leftover paint that I had and painted it white. I really like how it turned out and I think the white color makes the plant pop now, don't you?

Here's what you need to finish off your DIY plant stand:

HomeRight Super Paint Sprayer
Paint {you won't need much, so feel free to use something leftover}
chalkboard paint
painters tape

Start by thinning down your paint. The HomeRight Finish Max Super doesn't require as much thinning of the paint as some of the other paint sprayers so keep that in mind. I poured the paint into the Finish Max paint container and used a spoon to slowly add in the water. I probably ended up with a ratio of 2/3 paint to 1/3 water. You want it to slowly run off your stir stick. This puppy has some power, {450 watts of it!}, so it's able to handle thicker paints than other paint sprayers.

I applied two coats of paint waiting between each coat to let it dry, and came up with a perfectly smooth painted finish even though the wood wasn't quite that perfect.

After letting the stand dry overnight, I taped off the area I wanted to add chalkboard paint to, and added a few coats of chalkboard paint.

I let that dry overnight and in the morning, my DIY painted wooden plant stand was ready!

I free handed a little salutation {thank you Charlotte's Web for increasing my vocabulary}, and bought myself a beautiful hanging basket.

I really love how this turned out.

I'm so excited that now I can enjoy everything that's planted in my beautiful hanging basket. Plus, it's down low, perfect for watering.

I'm crossing my fingers that I don't kill it! Anyone want to take some bets? If nothing else, the stand will still look pretty even if the plant doesn't!
