MADISON – Wisconsin’s coaches have viewed Tyler Wahl as a perfect fit for the program since they began recruiting the versatile forward from Lakeville (Minn.) North High School.

The 6-foot-7, 200-pounder attacks the basket with authority, is a deft and willing passer, rebounds with tenacity and can defend any position on the court.

Wahl, who is preparing for his senior season and has been a fan of the UW program since before his recruitment began, on Thursday gave an oral commitment to the Badgers.

He is the first player to give UW a commitment for the ’19 freshman class. UW is also recruiting his friend and AAU teammate on Division I Minnesota, forward Zeke Nnaji, for the ’19 class.

Wahl chose UW over offers from Iowa State, Minnesota, Northwestern, Butler and several other schools.

UW was the first high-major program to offer Wahl.

That offer came in late April. Wahl participated in UW’s team camp last weekend and was scheduled to attend the advanced camp Friday.

“I just want to find the college that fits me best,” Wahl told the Journal Sentinel last month during an AAU tournament in Plymouth, Minn. “That is the one I’ll end up choosing in the end.”

Wahl’s versatility has been on display during the high school and AAU seasons.

Wahl averaged 17.5 points, 11.9 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 2.9 blocks to help Lakeville North to a 27-5 mark last season.

“I’m able to do a little bit of everything,” Wahl told the Journal Sentinel last month. “If I am scoring it is fine. But I’d much rather have 10 assists than 10 points.”
