Smoke alert: Crews fight 20-acre brush fire in North Naples

Naples

Fire crews were fighting a 20-acre blaze in North Naples on Tuesday evening.

Smoke from a fire off Collier Boulevard and Broken Back Road, just north of Immokalee Road.

The fire was reported about 5:30 p.m. at Collier Boulevard and Broken Back Road, just north of Immokalee Road, according to the North Collier Fire Control & Rescue District.

No structures were threatened by the fire, which started in a wooded area.

"It's a little difficult to access, so Forestry is cutting around there," said John Stanfill, a battalion chief for North Collier Fire.

Heather Mazurkiewicz, a spokeswoman for the fire district, said the area is full of melaleuca trees.

Crews from North Collier, the Florida Forest Service, the Greater Naples Fire Rescue District, the Immokalee Fire Control District and the Marco Island Fire Department were at the scene, according to Mazurkiewicz.

"We try to place any available apparatus on a fire like this to stop the spread," Mazurkiewicz said. "It's very hot and dry right now. That's a concern."
