Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley needed raise to make more than Kyler Murray this year

In a world of amateurism in which NCAA coaches make millions and athletes receive scholarships, consider Oklahoma's 2018 coach-quarterback dynamic a striking anomaly. 

Sooners quarterback Kyler Murray is a two-sport athlete. He recently finalized a baseball contract with the Oakland Athletics which included a reported $4.6 million signing bonus after he was taken with the No. 9 overall pick in the first round of the MLB draft.

As part of his contract with the A's, Murray will get play football this season as the successor to Heisman winner Baker Mayfield before starting his professional baseball career.

Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley, meanwhile, is set to be paid $4.8 million for the 2018 season after his new contract was approved by the school's regents Tuesday. The compensation amount is a $1.5 million raise in addition to the scheduled $200,000 increase that kicked in back in February.

So, to recap, Murray is slated to make $4.6 million, which is just a little less than his coach's nice $4.8 million salary.
