Candy shop leaves Dexter Avenue, moves to mall

It’s still called Waterfront Sweets, but there’s no more waterfront. Just an ice rink.

The handmade candy shop arrived on Dexter Avenue late last year, part of a wave of new restaurants and shops in downtown Montgomery. Six months later, Waterfront Sweets left its renovated spot near the fountain and headed to the Eastdale Mall food court.

Owner and confections specialist Kimyatta Moss said she had some “differences” with the building’s managers and that foot traffic wasn’t great.

Kron Morris, left, and his mother Kimyatta Moss are setting up Waterfront Sweets inside Eastdale Mall.

“I love downtown. I’m gonna miss downtown,” she said. “I did very well there, even without a lot of foot traffic. My repeat customers are what made that (happen). I’m hoping they come this way.”

The new spot in the mall will allow her to cook more types of food and expand the menu. Think fried Oreos, funnel cakes and a breakfast service with chicken and waffles. She’s also planning to make her usual array of pralines, fudge and other treats in the space and sell them at a separate kiosk near the entrance to the food court.

“It’s a whole different line now,” she said.

Moss expects to finish a remodel and open the mall space in early July. It’ll follow mall hours — 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Her mother, Geri Moss, runs A Touch of Soul Café on Montgomery Street downtown.
