A new sign going up near the Anderson County line on Interstate 85 southbound will create a grander entrance into the county.

The sign, which bears the Anderson County logo of a palmetto tree and the historic Anderson County courthouse, is expected to be finished in the next couple of weeks, according to County Administrator Rusty Burns.

Burns said the sign was an idea brought forth by Leadership Anderson Class 33. Leadership Anderson is a leadership development program through the Anderson Area Chamber of Commerce.

Leadership Anderson Class 33 raised funds to help pay for the sign and installation.

The sign cost $57,500. Pam Christopher with Anderson County said donations came from more than 70 groups, individuals and businesses, including donations from each of the members of Leadership Anderson Class 33.

A welcome sign is under construction for Anderson County on I-85 Southbound, near the State Highway 153 exit, in Powdersville on Monday. The sign is expected to be completed this week.

The new sign will be more noticeable than the smaller green "Anderson County" highway sign.

"Now you'll know you're entering the empire of the sun," Burns said.

Burns said there will be a dedication celebration scheduled in a few weeks.

Anderson County leaders are already looking ahead to plans for erecting a similar sign near the county's southern border in the future.
