I’m just going to admit right off the bat that I wasn’t a huge fan of the original Incredbles movie…at first. I had a three-year-old and a baby, and I think I was just exhausted (a theme that plays a big part in Incredibles 2, by the way). But my son was at an age where he wanted to watch the same things over and over, and I was at an age where I wanted to let him so that I could get a little time to myself (or at least with the new baby). So The original Incredibles played on a loop for a while, and it really grew on me. I started to recognize just how on-point the family dynamics were, and how well developed the characters were. It’s still not my favorite Pixar movie, but it is special.

Incredibles 2 - the whole familySo is Incredibles 2, which I got a sneak peek at earlier this week thanks to a press screening. Basically, if you liked the first one, you’ll like the second one. And if you loved the first one, you’ll be over the moon about the second one. All of the characters you love are back (although there can never be enough Frozone or Edna for my liking), and the action has been ramped up. One of Helen’s scenes is downright dizzying.

Incredibles 2 - Helen at workI was in a theater with a lot of little kids, and it was fun hearing their reactions. There was a lot of laughter, and gasping, and even cheering in a couple of places. The kids were especially delighted by Jack-Jack, who plays a central role this time around. In fact, the entire family dynamic gets turned upside down when Helen goes back to superheroing – without Bob. So while that part of the plot was pretty broadly done, we get to explore how a big tough male superhero handles the challenges of staying home with the kids – helping with homework, dealing with the emotional roller coaster of a teenager, and taking care of the most special of babies.

Incredibles 2 - Jack-Jack[As a fun little aside, Disney has provided downloadable/printable pdfs for a couple of recipes related to the movie. You can make Bob’s Incredible Waffles, which look delicious, and Jack-Jack’s Cookie Num Nums, which look suspiciously close to the original Nestle Toll House Cookie recipe.]

So if you’re looking for something fun to do this weekend (or next week, if your kids are on break already), take your whole family to see Incredibles 2. It definitely lives up to Pixar’s stellar reputation of entertaining the kids and the adults. In fact, my teenage daughter saw it with some friends today, and said it was really good! So there you go, it even has the teen stamp of approval.
