Some amendments not included in farm bill hearing will likely be brought up on Senate floor

Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown says he will work with Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley to get an amendment on commodity program payment limits into the Farm Bill on the Senate floor.

Brown says the amendment would cap payments to non-farmers.

“Wasll Street investors shouldn’t be getting any direct tax payer payments,” he says. “The payments should go to the farmers, and not the big agribusiness guys, but farmers who are really farming their land.”

He tells Brownfield it remains a priority even though last-minute changes to the wording of the amendment prevented it from being introduced during the hearing.

Brown says an amendment to modify the ARC payment calculation will also likely be brought up on the floor.

“To build the safety net for farmers when prices are low or if crop yields are because of weather conditions and natural disasters- those are issues that corn and soybean growers particularly care about,” he says.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has said the bill will be brought to the full Senate before the July 4th recess.
