Things to do: Cherry Festival kicks off this weekend in High Rolls

HIGH ROLLS – The 53rd annual Cherry Festival, organized by the High Rolls Mountain Park Lions Club, is set to kick off this weekend Saturday, June 16, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, June 17, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the High Rolls Community Center on 56 Cottage Row.

Visitors will be able to buy cherries or pay to pick their own in the local orchards.

Other activities include jumping balloons for children, face painting, 65 vendors to choose from and lots of food and drinks.

Festival turn-out is expected to be around 4,000.

Admission is free. Organizers are asking the public to leave pets at home.

To find the Cherry Festival, turn north on U.S. Highway 82 at the 8 1/2 mile marker and follow the signs to the parking area. Parking is free in the Lions Club parking lots. For vendor information visit www.highrollsfestivals.com

Other things to do 

Also up in the mountains, Sacred Heart Mission in Cloudcroft, 205 James Canyon on Highway 82, will be hosting its sixth annual Fiesta in the Clouds Saturday, June 16.

Starting at 10 a.m., the community is invited to gather at the church for the walk of faith through the village followed by a mass.

The fiesta will kick off at noon and feature children’s games, face painting, live music by the trio of Nannette DuQuette, John Adams and Joe Jones and a variety of folk dancers.

Other entertainment will be provided by Courtney Salazar and the Tularosa Folklorico Dancers, the White Sands Valley Folklorico Dancers, the Dog Canyon Line Dancers and Elena Hernandez and Danzantes de Corazon.

A special appearance by the Matachines of the Danzas de San Jose from Las Cruces will also perform at the fiesta beginning from noon to 1 p.m.

The fiesta will be serving food such as red enchiladas, Hatch green chile cheeseburgers, hot dogs, roasted corn and funnel cakes.
