Bobby Rush, MC Lyte, Tony! Toni! Toné! playing first Black Arts Fest MKE Aug. 4

Hip-hop pioneer MC Lyte will close out the inaugural Black Arts Fest MKE Aug. 4 at Henry Maier Festival Park.

The new Black Arts Fest MKE boasts blues legend Bobby Rush, pioneering rapper MC Lyte and towering R&B group Tony! Toni! Toné! among its first headliners.

The festival — a replacement for African World Festival, which ended in 2013 — takes place at Maier Festival Park Aug. 4.

84-year-old Blues Hall of Famer Bobby Rush will play the first Black Arts Fest MKE at 6 p.m. Aug. 4.

Rush, the 84-year-old Blues Hall of Famer, will perform at 6 p.m. on the Miller Lite Oasis stage. Expect to hear signatures like "Chicken Heads," and perhaps some material from his 2016 blues charts topper "Porcupine Meat." 

Tony! Toni! Toné!, best known for '80s and '90s hits like "Feels Good" and "Whatever You Want," follows on the Miller stage at 8 p.m.

"Feels Good" hitmaker Tony! Toni! Toné! will play the first Black Arts Fest MKE at 8 p.m. Aug. 4 on the Miller Lite Oasis stage at Henry Maier Festival Park.

MC Lyte, the first female rapper to have a gold single, and the first female solo rapper to be nominated for a Grammy, closes out the festival at 10 p.m.

Led by executive director Patrice Harris, former Summerfest marketing director, Black Arts Fest MKE will also feature music, art, dance performances, children workshops and African heritage activities on the east side of the grounds, including on the Johnson Controls World Sound Stage. There will also be a market square featuring products from black-owned businesses. 

Adult tickets are $9 through Aug. 3 at blackartsfestmke.com, and $12 at the gate. Senior tickets (ages 60 and up) and youth tickets (ages 8 to 11) are $8. Admission is free for military service members and veterans and children ages 7 and under. Each adult ticket and youth ticket includes one free Discovery World ticket valid this August.
