Senator on getting a farm bill to finish line

U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.), Ranking Member of the Senate Agriculture Committee

Michigan Senator Debbie Stabenow says she’s committed to helping get a final farm bill to the finish line now that the Senate ag committee has passed its farm bill.

Stebenow, the ranking member of the committee, says there is support in the House Ag Committee from its ranking member for the Senate’s bipartisan approach, “I AM hoping that since the ranking Democrat in the House committee, Collin Peterson, has lent his support for the Senate bipartisan (farm) bill, that maybe there’s a way to pass the Senate (farm) bill. I mean, that would be the BEST way.” Stabenow says if that’s not possible, “I hope the House will decide to pass a bipartisan bill and we can go to conference quickly.”

Stabenow says the Senate has Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) provisions that provide states with job training funds to help recipients get full time jobs. She calls that much more responsible and effective than the failed House Farm bill which increased work requirements for SNAP, while reducing benefits overall.

Stabenow says farmers and rural America need and deserve a new five-year farm bill, not an extension of the current bill.
