Evangelist Franklin Graham Trashes Trump Immigration Policy: Ripping Children from Their Parents is 'Disgraceful'
Evangelist Franklin Graham, an outspoken Donald Trump supporter and the son of Rev. Billy Graham, trashed the president’s immigration policy on Wednesday, telling the New York Times he believes the administration’s policy of ripping children from their parents at the border, among other things, is “disgraceful.”
“I think it’s disgraceful, it’s terrible to see families ripped apart and I don’t support that one bit,” Graham said, adding he “blames the politicians for the last 20, 30 years that have allowed this to escalate to where it is today.”
As the Times, reports, the conservative evangelical Southern Baptist Convention passed a resolution maintaining “the priority of family unity,” which calls for securing the border “and providing a pathway to legal status for undocumented immigrants living in the country.”
“We declare that any form of nativism, mistreatment, or exploitation is inconsistent with the gospel of Jesus Christ,” the convention said in its resolution.
President of the United States Catholic bishops’ conference and archbishop of Galveston-Houston cardinal Daniel DiNardo released a statement criticizing Jeff Sessions after the attorney general implemented a policy denying asylum to women and families fleeing domestic and gang violence.
“At its core, asylum is an instrument to preserve the right to life,” DiNardo said.
“Families are the foundational element of our society and they must be able to stay together,” he added. “Separating babies from their mothers is not the answer and is immoral.”
