Peterson aligns more with Senate farm bill

House Ag Committee Ranking Member Collin Peterson is praising his Senate counterparts for putting together a bipartisan farm bill.

The Minnesota Democrat tells Brownfield success in the Senate could put pressure on House Republicans who continue pushing for SNAP reform.

“It kind of smokes out their strategy and ideology, they’re going to be isolated.  And there’s going to be questions in some of these states where the Republican Senators support this and why aren’t the Republican House members being reasonable?”

Peterson says in the aftermath of the House farm bill being voted down, he talked to Senate Ag Committee Chair Pat Roberts about Mike Conaway insisting on changing work requirements in the nutrition program.

“And Pat (tells me) he’s not going anywhere near that, it’s not on the table.  So I went back to (Conaway) and told him that and he just blew up and yelled at me basically and said ‘we’ll just have the Senate write the bill.”

Peterson claims he and Chairman Conaway have not spoken in seven weeks.

The House farm bill is scheduled to be voted on a second time June 22nd.
