US, Canada trade tensions heat up

Trade tensions are running high between the U.S. and Canada, with President Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau exchanging words over the weekend, after the G7 meeting.

Trudeau said Canada would move forward with retaliatory tariffs in response to steel and aluminum tariffs imposed by the U.S. President. Trudeau said Canada would not be pushed around when it comes to trade.

Trump responded in a tweet, calling Trudeau dishonest and weak.

Trump cited Canada’s dairy supply management system as one of the big issues. And White House economic advisor Larry Kudlow says Canada is to blame for the delay in renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement. He says the US was close to making a deal with Canada before Trudeau’s comments.

Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland said the attacks on Trudeau are not appropriate or useful.
