GOP wants NAFTA by Labor Day; Trump wants Russia in G8

President Trump is at the G7 Summit with trade tensions high between the U.S., Canada and other allies. Trump reportedly is calling for Russia to re-join the G-8.

Earlier this week, a group of Senate Republicans has urged President Trump to wrap up NAFTA re-negotiations by Labor Day. At a White House meeting Wednesday, the GOP lawmakers reportedly told Trump that the lingering talks could slow the economy and impact the mid-term elections. And, the senators warned that the unresolved deal, along with U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Canada and Mexico, are ultimately hurting farmers.

Iowa Senators Joni Ernst and Chuck Grassley attended the meeting with Grassley telling the Hill that there is now a sense that NAFTA talks will wrap up by July.

According to the Hill, President Trump and trade representative Robert Lighthizer told the senators they will finish NAFTA talks in the next few months and urged them not to support Senator Bob Corker’s bill that would limit Trump’s power to impose tariffs.
