WIAA softball: Defense saves the day for Oakfield

Oakfield’s defense had the final say in a 2-0 victory over Blair-Taylor in the semifinals of the WIAA Division 5 state tournament Thursday at Goodman Diamond.

With Blair-Taylor threatening in the seventh, junior second baseman Maddy Cruthird snared an infield fly and then beat a runner who’d strayed too far off second to the bag for a game-ending double play.

The play preserved a shutout for sophomore Avery Conger, who allowed three hits walked three and struck out one.

Oakfield scored In the first inning off a double from sophomore Mya Lamonska. Two innings later her single advance a runner to third, who scored before the end of the play due to a throwing error.

Blair-Taylor finished 19-2.

Chippewa Falls McDonell 5, Wisconsin Rapids Assumption 3: The defending champion scored three times in the fifth and once in the sixth to take a 5-2 lead.

That three-run inning was sparked by run-scoring singles by sophomore Olivia Misna and junior Carly Jenson. The other run scored on a wild pitch.

Misna and senior pitcher Megan Baier went had two hits for the Mack, who improved to 19-1.  Assumption finished 16-5.
