Erik Jones (20) battles with Dennis Prunty in the 2016 Slinger Nationals.

Erik Jones plans to come back for a second shot at the Slinger Nationals this year.

The 22-year-old Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series sophomore, who was denied a victory in his Nationals debut in 2016, has committed to returning for the July 10 special at Slinger Speedway, promoter Todd Thelen told the Journal Sentinel on Tuesday night.

Two years ago, Jones waged a relentless, back-and-forth, full-contact battle with Matt Kenseth before being knocked out of the groove with a move Kenseth conceded afterward “was definitely way too extreme.”

Although fans might be licking their chops for a rematch – the two were NASCAR teammates at the time and Jones replaced Kenseth this season at Joe Gibbs Racing – Kenseth has not indicated he plans to be back. Kenseth, the 2003 NASCAR champion from Cambridge, has won a record seven Nationals titles.

Among the others national-level drivers who have said so far they’re coming, Thelen said, are:

- Bubba Pollard, the defending winner, a short-track standout from Senoia, Ga.

- Ty Majeski, a Ford NASCAR development driver from Seymour, who raced wheel-to-wheel with Pollard last year.

- Chase Purdy, 18, of Tuscaloosa, Ala., an ARCA rookie who won 10 of 21 late-model starts in 2016 and raced in the K&N East series last year.

- Johnny Sauter, the Camping World Truck Series champion leader and 2016 champion and a native of Necedah.

- Steve Dorer, who is based in Florida but race much of the summer in the Midwest.
