First Quantum Abandons the Pebble Mine

Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) works to Safeguard the Earth, its People, its Plants, Animals, and the Natural Systems on which all Life depends. NRDC was founded in 1970 by a Group of Law Students and Attorneys at the forefront of the Environmental Movement.

They combine the Power of more than Three Million Members and Online Activists with the Expertise of some 500 Scientists, Lawyers, and Policy Advocates across the Globe to ensure the Rights of all People to the Air, the Water, and the Wild.

Canadian Mining Company First Quantum Minerals is walking away from the Toxic Gold and Copper Mega Mine.

First Quantum has decided not to pursue its planned Investment in the Pebble Mine, a Project that threatens Alaska's Bristol Bay Wilderness, its World-renowned Salmon Runs and Wildlife, and its Native Communities.

This momentous decision came just weeks after a Delegation of Alaskan Leaders traveled to Toronto to attend First Quantum's Shareholder Meeting and meet with the Company's CEO.

At the Meeting, they presented First Quantum CEO, Philip Pascall, with over 250,000 Petitions in Opposition to the Pebble Mine, including 100,000 from NRDC Members and Activists.

And First Quantum has now done the right thing: it listened to Advocates and the People of Bristol Bay and Walked Away from the Pebble Mine.

We hope First Quantum's decision to Abandon the Project helps Close the Door on this Ill-Conceived and Reckless Scheme for good.

But for the moment, we must keep the Momentum going by:

Calling out President Trump's EPA Chief Scott Pruitt for his Backroom Deal that has enabled the Revival of this Disastrous Project by
Mobilizing Massive Public Pressure on the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Opposition to the Pebble Mine's Clean Water Permit Application. Making sure no other Companies jump into the Breach and Invest in this dangerous Mine.
