An Anderson man who had barricaded himself inside a Piedmont home surrendered Sunday evening after the Anderson County Sheriff's Office SWAT unit fired tear gas into the dwelling, Sheriff Chad McBride said Monday.

Sheriff's spokeswoman Nikki Carson said the SWAT unit was called out as a precaution in the middle of the afternoon Sunday after a sheriff's deputy tried to talk to the man about several outstanding warrants.

After efforts to coax the man out of the home on Prospect Street were unsuccessful, the decision was made to use tear gas, McBride said.

The 29-year-old man was taken to the Anderson County Detention Center on outstanding warrants that included a charge of armed robbery, McBride said.

The man's identity could not be confirmed Monday because the warrants were unavailable.
